In this segment, here's 18-year old accordionist and piano player Jo Ann Castle (less than a year before making her first Lawrence Welk appearance).

Here's a kinescope of a 1957 telecast of The Spade Cooley Show, which aired on KTLA-TV in Los Angeles.

By this time the self-proclaimed "King of Western Swing" had become, albeit for a short period, the Phil Spitalny of Western Swing as Spade fronted an all-female band (which included an 18-year-old accordionist and piano player named Jo Ann Castle).

Time for a 1945 Soundie  with Spade Cooley and His Western Dance Band, "Take Me Back To Tulsa," featuring Spade's star vocalist at the time, Tex Williams.



This short film, an RCM production, was produced by Ben Hersh and directed by Josef Berne.

Here's Spade Cooley and His Orchestra with a great toe-tappin' instrumental, "Three-Way Boogie."

This is one of Spade's best instrumentals.


Recorded in Hollywood on May 3, 1946 and released on Columbia Records in August of that year.

Here now is music by Spade Cooley and his Band, a song that he co-wrote entitled "Boggs Boogie," featuring co-writer Noel Boggs on steel guitar.



Recorded for RCA Victor Records in Hollywood, California on April 25, 1947, 70 years ago this coming Tuesday!



For the record, guitarist Jimmy Wyble was the song's other co-composer.
